Meet some of our latest Smithsonian Student Travel winners

Smithsonian Student Travel is pleased to introduce you to some of our latest contest winners. Three group leaders who are planning 2010 tours each received one free-trip voucher to bestow upon a deserving student.

Winning group leader Karen W. from Mount Olive, Alabama, will lead her third trip to Washington, D.C., in April. Karen says, “My students are very excited about their tour. We have always traveled with Smithsonian Student Travel. We love it!”

Karen selected fifth grader Alexia F., whose nickname is Blaze, as the winner of the free tour. A straight-A student, Blaze is “especially excited about seeing the White House because it looks so big in all the pictures.” Karen says that last year, “the students learned that it takes more than 510 gallons of paint to paint the White House, so Blaze is excited to see how big it really is.”

The remaining free trips were awarded to group leaders from Arizona and California, who plan to travel to the East Coast in March and June.

In addition, Smithsonian Student Travel presented free iPod touches to five lucky student winners, including Lincoln H. from Bradenton, Florida. Lincoln’s group leader, Kelly B. says, “As a self-proclaimed history buff, Lincoln was thrilled to learn that we are heading to D.C. in February, especially since he hasn’t been to D.C. since he was eight months old! Our seventh- and eighth-grade students are really excited about the trip. Because it has become part of our school tradition now, the students have already heard feedback from other students who have been before.”

This will be Kelly’s fourth trip with Smithsonian Student Travel. Although this year’s trip is the Washington, D.C.: The Capitol Tour, her group has traveled with Smithsonian Student Travel to Washington, D.C., New York and Boston in previous years. She says her students “love the prospect of a little independence, and the parents love that the trips are so well organized and safe for their kids. The success of former trips and the huge educational benefit of the tours have been a big selling point. This year, despite the economy, we have our largest group to date traveling!”
